The Environ AVST Ladder, Explained: How to Move Up Safely (and When to Pause)
Environ AVST Ladder: How to Move Up Safely
“Should I be on a higher AVST by now?” It is one of the questions I hear most often in consultations here at The Beauty Room, usually from a client who has been using the same moisturiser for a while and worries she is falling behind. There is no fixed timeline for the AVST ladder, and that is by design, not by accident.
What the AVST ladder is actually for?
AVST stands for Advanced Vitamin STEP-UP Technology, developed by Dr Des Fernandes to introduce vitamin A to the skin gradually rather than all at once. A high dose from day one can cause irritation and redness, so Environ built a range, AVST 1 through to AVST 5, that increases in strength step by step. Each level gives your skin time to build tolerance before you move to the next.
Some clients progress through the levels within a year. Others stay on AVST 2 or 3 for two or three years, because that is what their skin needs to look and feel its best. Both are correct outcomes. The ladder is not a race, and I do not judge how quickly a client’s skin adapts.
I decide when to recommend a step up by looking at your skin directly, not by how long you have owned a bottle. That is why every client of mine books a skin consultation before changing anything at home. I will tell you plainly whether you are ready or whether your skin will do better staying exactly where it is for now.
Signs you might be ready to move up
Your current AVST level should feel settled. No tightness, flaking or sensitivity after applying it, even first thing in the morning. Any redness from when you first started that level has fully gone. You have also used it consistently for a few months, since vitamin A works beneath the surface before results show on the surface.
If that matches your skin right now, you are usually in a good position to move up a level. I confirm this properly during a skin consultation, because skin that looks ready in the mirror does not always behave the same way once the concentration increases.
Signs it is time to pause, not push on
Pushing through irritation to prove you are progressing does not work with Environ, and it will not work with vitamin A in general. It sets your skin back rather than forward because irritated skin cannot perform the repair work the product is there to do.
Pause your current level, or step back down slightly, if you notice redness that has not settled within a day or two, ongoing flaking or tightness, or new sensitivity to products your skin previously handled well. None of that means the product has failed you. It means your skin needs a slower pace right now, and that is a normal, manageable adjustment, not a setback.
Sun exposure, certain medications, pregnancy and stress can all change how your skin tolerates vitamin A, sometimes for a matter of weeks. I factor all of this in when I review a client’s routine, which is one of the reasons I would rather see you in clinic than have you guess from a label.
Why the numbering can feel confusing from the outside
Environ has refined its formulations over the years, so if you have picked up two AVST products and the numbers do not match what you remember, you are not imagining it. The Ionzyme range sits alongside AVST for clients who need a more advanced step, which adds another layer that is easy to get wrong from memory alone. I check the full range daily, so I can tell you exactly where a product sits without guesswork.
This is why I always recommend a proper conversation about your Environ skincare rather than matching products online. Skin changes with the seasons, with hormones and with age, so a level that suited you two years ago is not always the right one now.
Building your routine around the ladder
Your AVST level only works as hard as the rest of your routine allows it to. Cleansing, hydration and daily sun protection all support what vitamin A is doing. Skip any of those, and it becomes far harder to tell whether a product change is genuinely needed or whether something else in your routine needs fixing first.
If you are starting, our Environ products range shows you where the essential moisturisers sit alongside targeted serums and body care. The full Environ skincare category is worth browsing too, so you can see how AVST fits within Environ’s wider Focus Care ranges for sensitivity, pigmentation and ageing once your foundation level is settled.
For a guided approach rather than shopping alone, our Environ facials in Birmingham and Environ facials in Halesowen both start with a full skin assessment, so your in-clinic treatment and your home care work towards the same result. We also offer Environ TCA Cool Peels for clients whose skin is ready for a more intensive step, always guided by where you currently sit on the ladder.
When to bring in professional support
If you have managed your Environ routine at home for a while and are not sure you are progressing, a short skin consultation at The Beauty Room settles it quickly and costs far less than buying the wrong product and starting again.
For clients who want structured support over several months, our Skin Transformation Journey combines in-clinic treatment with a planned home care routine, including exactly where you sit on the AVST ladder and when we review it together.
You do not need to push through discomfort to prove you are doing your skincare properly. The AVST ladder is built to be gradual, and moving at the right pace for your own skin gets better results than rushing it, even if that pace is slower than you expected.
If you would like an honest opinion on where you currently sit, get in touch and we will talk it through properly.
