How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal works by focusing the laser light on localised areas, targeting the melanin in the skin which is the key to follicle growth. Using a wavelength of 808nm, the laser prevents the hair from developing inside the follicle, without affecting the skin around the follicle. Laser treatment destroys hair follicles, which disrupts the hair growth
Permanent Laser Hair Removal near Stourbridge
Common areas which are treated are the face, chest, legs, arms, underarms and bikini line. It is great for women with excessive hair growth who suffer from PCOS or menopause. Laser hair removal is safe, but there can be occasional side effects, such as pain and discomfort, and red skin that may last for a few hours up to a few days.
Unlike electrolysis, in which each individual hair is targetted, laser hair removal can cover larger areas of skin simultaneously, making every treatment cost-effective, quick and efficient. However, care must be taken when using the machine to ensure other areas of skin remain undamaged.
Across the body, hair goes through several stages, and only the hairs in the growth phase – Anagen, can be affected by the laser. The other two phases – Catagen and Telogen, remain undamaged by the light as the hairs are unattached to the dermal base cells. You’ll need regular sessions to keep your hair from regrowing. How many sessions are needed varies for each person. Typically, you may need 6 sessions for the face every 4 weeks and for the body 12 sessions every 6 weeks. Each session may take between 15 minutes to over an hour depending on the area treated.

IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PERMANENT?
Laser hair removal is considered semi-permanent. Its effectiveness is dependent on the individual skin character, and the number of treatment sessions, and you can enjoy little to no growth for at least six months. Generally, most hair regrowth is usually finer and lighter in colour, the main reason why laser hair removal is a hugely popular treatment amongst both men and women.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment that gives hair its colour, melanin, deep within the hair follicle. The laser, which has an 808nm wavelength, prevents hair from growing inside the follicle while not affecting the skin around the follicle. Laser treatment destroys hair follicles, causing hair growth to be disrupted. The machine’s handpiece sends light into the hair follicle, damaging it and eliminating the hair root, effectively stopping further growth. After that, the hair will fall out because it no longer has a root to anchor it in the follicle, leaving silky smooth, stubble-free skin.
Laser hair removal is a method of removing unwanted hair. Legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, and the bikini line are all popular treatment areas. However, with the exception of the eyelid and surrounding area, it is possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area. Tattooed skin should not be treated either.
The success of laser hair removal is influenced by hair colour and skin type. The basic principle is that the pigment in the hair should absorb light, but not the pigment in the skin. The laser should only harm the hair follicles while causing no harm to the skin. As a result, a contrast in hair and skin colour — dark hair and light skin — produces the best results.
When there is little contrast between hair and skin colour, the risk of skin damage increases, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people with darker skin. Laser hair removal is less effective on hair colours that absorb light poorly, such as grey, red, blond, and white. Laser treatment options for light-coloured hair, on the other hand, are still being developed.
Hair does not fall out immediately, but rather over a period of days to weeks. This may appear to be continued hair growth. Because hair growth and loss occur in a cycle, repeated treatments are usually required, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.
The outcomes vary greatly and are difficult to predict. Most people have hair removal that lasts for several months, if not years. However, laser hair removal does not ensure permanent hair removal. Hair that regrows is typically finer and lighter in colour.
For long-term hair reduction, you may require maintenance laser treatments.

IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL PAINFUL?
Laser hair removal can be slightly uncomfortable depending on the area of the body. The skin on our face can be quite sensitive and treatment here may be uncomfortable. Many people report that it feels like being lightly flicked with an elastic band and afterwards the sensation is similar to a mild sunburn. On skin that is less sensitive, such as legs and arms, people often mention a tingling feeling.
The Nu TriLaze Plus from the British Institute of Lasers uses cutting-edge SuperCool™ technology, allowing larger areas to be treated in one session, saving time and money.

SHOULD I SHAVE BEFORE THE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?
Because the laser targets hair it is important that there is a little hair growth for the laser light to travel down into the hair follicle. The shorter the hair, however, the less energy is depleted, meaning that the laser is strong enough to cause sufficient damage when it reaches the follicle.
Wax and depilatory creams work by either pulling the hair out of the follicle or dissolving the hair and root, leaving nothing for the laser to travel down, rendering the treatment pointless. A razor is ideal, though, as it leaves stubble behind.

CAN I GO IN THE SUN BEFORE AND AFTER LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?
It is advised that you avoid sun exposure for approximately four weeks before your laser hair removal treatment, this includes the tanning bed. Cover-up, or use a broad spectrum protection cream with a high SPF to ensure your skin isn’t damaged by the sun. Lasers can seriously aggravate sunburn, if your skin is trying to recover from sunburn at the same time, it can take much longer to return to full health.
Most customers will schedule their hair removal for the winter months, meaning they will have beautifully smooth skin for the summer season. Wax and depilatory creams work by either pulling the hair out of the follicle or dissolving the hair and root, leaving nothing for the laser to travel down, rendering the treatment pointless. A razor is ideal, though, as it leaves stubble behind.

HOW MANY SESSIONS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL WILL I NEED?
To achieve optimum results it can take several laser sessions.
To achieve the best effect, the laser needs to be applied during the growing phase. However, only a proportion of your body hair is in anagen at the same time, we recommend that you return in four weeks for another session once the remaining hair has moved into the growth phase. Every individual’s hair is distinct, affecting the number of sessions needed, depending on the thickness and darkness of the hair follicle.

Very rarely the effects of laser treatment can sometimes show up as :
• pain, discomfort, or tenderness
• red skin that may last for some time

WHAT AFTERCARE IS RECOMMENDED AFTER LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and applying deodorant because your skin will feel very sensitive for around 24 to 48 hours after the laser hair removal. If you do shower in this timeframe keep the temperature lukewarm and gently pat yourself dry afterwards. Do not rub as this can cause your skin to become sore. Please also avoid products that contain perfume or other skin irritants.
