My Real Summer Skincare Routine: Morning to Night
My Real Summer Skincare Routine
People assume my own skincare routine must be complicated, given what I do for a living. It honestly isn’t. What changes twice a year is not the number of steps; it’s what each one needs to be doing. Longer days and far more time outdoors mean my skin has to work harder to defend itself, and sun damage has a habit of building quietly in the background long before it ever shows on the surface.
So every summer, I go through my own kit properly and ask whether everything in it still earns its place. Here’s the actual routine I follow through the warmer months, morning and evening, the two products I swap in for the season, and why sun damage deserves more attention than most of us give it.
What Sun Damage Actually Means for Your Skin
It’s easy to think of sun damage as something that only happens on holiday, once you’ve properly burned. In reality, UV exposure triggers your skin’s melanin production and breaks down collagen at a cellular level every time you’re outside unprotected, whether that’s a beach day or a walk to the shops. For skin that’s already prone to pigmentation, that process shows up faster and settles in more stubbornly. None of this needs to be alarming. It just means sun protection has to be part of the routine, not something reached for occasionally.
My Morning Routine
I start every morning the same way, whatever the weather. A gentle cleanse, then my Environ Botanical Infused Moisturising Toner to rebalance the skin before anything active goes on.
From there, it’s an antioxidant step. My Environ Vita-Peptide C-Quence Serum helps defend against the free radical damage that UV and general environmental stress cause through the day, which matters considerably more in summer.
The last step is the one I genuinely won’t skip: sun protection. I reach for the Environ Alpha Day Lotion SPF15 because it does two jobs at once: a broad-spectrum SPF15 alongside a gentle exfoliating acid that helps keep tone even, and it sits lightly enough under makeup that I’ll actually top it up if I’m out for most of the day. One product, properly applied, does more for my skin over a summer than several extra steps ever would.
My Evening Routine
Evenings are when I do the repair work the day’s exposure has made necessary. Cleanse and tone as usual, then straight into treatment.
For anyone dealing with pigmentation, this is where the Environ Multi-Bioactive Mela-Prep Lotion earns its place. It’s part of Environ’s Radiance+ range, built specifically for skin holding onto uneven tone, and evening is when it can get on with that work without any sun protection layered on top getting in the way.
I finish with a proper moisturiser to lock everything in. Nothing complicated. Just consistent.
The Two Product Swaps I Make for Summer
I keep the changes to two, deliberately. More than that and clients, myself included, stop following through.
Swap one: my usual day moisturiser becomes the Environ Alpha Day Lotion SPF15, so protection and hydration happen in a single step rather than two.
Swap two: my evening moisturiser becomes the Environ Multi-Bioactive Mela-Prep Lotion for the summer stretch, specifically because pigmentation-prone skin needs more support while sun exposure is at its highest.
Everything else in my routine stays the same. Small, deliberate changes, not a whole new routine.
The Questions I Get Asked Most About This
Does a broad-spectrum SPF15 protect against sun damage as well as a higher factor?
It protects well, provided you’re applying enough and topping up when you need to. I’d rather someone use an SPF15 consistently than own an SPF50 that sits in a drawer because it feels too heavy on the skin. Consistency beats the number on the bottle.
Can I use a vitamin C serum and SPF together?
Yes, and you should. Vitamin C helps neutralise the free radical damage UV causes; sun protection stops most of that UV reaching your skin in the first place. They’re doing two different jobs, not competing for the same one.
Is it too late to start protecting my skin properly, halfway through summer?
Never. Sun damage is cumulative, which cuts both ways. Every day you protect your skin from this point is a day it isn’t adding up. Start today. Your skin in a year’s time will thank you for it.
If you’re not sure your own routine is doing what it should this summer, that’s exactly what an Environ Facial is: a proper look at what your skin needs rather than a guess. Or explore the full range yourself over on our Environ Products page.
